We are back again for some good times in Apartment 4D. Jess is looking for dating advice in the app world from Schmidt, Winston is trying desperately to make friends at the police academy while Cece, Nick and Coach decide to get all of their illegal habits out of the way before they are officially living with a cop. What could possibly go wrong?

After a scoreless outing at last week's wedding, Schmidt seems to be the only one getting any action. Turns out he is a frequent user of "Dice," a dating app, and Jess wants in! As Schmidt predicts, Jess needs a lot of teaching in the mobile app dating world as her first date ends her up in an incredibly awkward situation. Schmidt, literally speechless at first, agrees to be her mentor. He sets up ten dates via the Dice app so she can learn how to translate the lingo, learn the signs and most importantly, learn how to walk away. It is tougher than it looks but she eventually learns the game. At the end of the day, she meets a nice guy and they connect. She goes against her instinct and blows him off when he admits that he lives nearby. After all, that's one of the signs for a pervert. But he isn't a pervert, it was just a fact he was mentioning. Schmidt also goes against his instincts and invites one of his one night stands to get some coffee. She laughs in his face and tells him he has no idea how to use Dice. Jess is able to convince the nice guy to return for a drink, but her first instinct may have been correct when she finds out he's a comedy magician and she is out of excuses to get away from him.

Winston, in an effort to make friends at the academy, invites Coach, Nick and Cece to a party with the other cadets. However, the three have decided to get super stoned upon realizing they probably won't be able to do that after Winston becomes a cop. They try to play it cool which always goes SO well, but wind up making asses out of themselves and Winston at the party. However, Winston uses their state tobond with his fellow cadets when they all play on their paranoia.

I will say this, there was such an opportunity for Coach, Nick and Cece to play stereotypical stoned characters but they were all incredibly convincing and hilarious. Nick has a touch of paranoia but never over the top nor cartoonish. Cece is almost trance-like as she asks a cute canine for advice on her life and Coach is insanely calm and just enjoying himself. (No judgment, Cece. My roomates' dog gives me incredibly good advice.) When the three of them end up in the closet (literally) at the end, it's a nice glimpse at how their friendship has grown, even if it is drug induced.

It was also really nice to see Schmidt and Jess have some screen time together. They have been at odds before but to see them bonding and working together added a nice layer to their relationship. Especially when Schmidt tells her that she's probably the best thing on the Dice app and she needed to remember that and not settle for less. A nice moment for the two.

But nothing made me laugh out loud harder than Schmidt not recognizing his phone ringing. His phone hadn't rung in two years, as evidenced by his Gotye ringtone. It's too true. How many of us see/hear the phone ring and take a moment to figure out what to do. I, for one, have uttered many times, "Ugh...why can't they just text me?" I feel ya, Schmidt.

MVP - Stoned Nick Miller.

Runner Up - Winston's shirt collection.

Favorite Lines:

  • Jess - I am darn tootin' fun: DTF. Seek same.
  • Schmidt - If pot were a piano, Nick would be a nine year old Chinese girl.
  • Schmidt - We have more work to do than the Kings of Leon. Good band, but it feels like they're stuck in one place musically.
  • Nick - First order of business, we eat their food. Then you look at the pool. Aww, what a great pool. I wish. I wish I could dive for rings. Because if you were stoned, you wouldn't dive for rings.
  • Jess - I'm not ready. That's like taking a musical from rehearsal straight to Broadway. You gotta workshop it first. Schmidt - If you are for ONE second suggesting that I don't know how to open a musical; how dare you!

So far so good for Season Four. I'm hoping these episodes keep up this pace. Anyone else hoping for a stoned version of True American? Let me know what you think either here or @eponineq on Twitter.
