Nashville-based country band Trick Pony brings its 1970s-influenced outlaw country-rock performance to the Suncoast Showroom Dec. 5.
Trick Pony was formed in 1996 by guitarist Keith Burns and bassist Ira Dean. The two crossed paths five years prior while working as backing musicians for country music stars
Joe Diffie and Tanya Tucker. Burns and Dean decided to form a group that was comprised of two men and a woman. Soon after, Burns and Dean welcomed singer, guitarist and harmonica player Heidi Newfield to the group.
The group spent several years perfecting its sound by playing in clubs across the southern United States. In 2000, the group signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records and released its self-titled debut album. The album's first single, "Pour Me," peaked at #12 on Billboard's Hot Country chart. The group's first album also yielded two additional charting singles, "On a Night Like This" and "Just What I Do," and was certified gold within a year of its release.
On the heels of its initial success, the trio released "On a Mission" in 2002, and found itself in the top-20 on the "Billboard 200" with the album's title track. The group went on to release its third album, "R.I.D.E. (Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment)" in 2005, four months before Newfield left the band to pursue a solo career.
Newfield was replaced by Aubrey Collins, a singer-songwriter who had previously appeared on ABC's "The One: Making a Music Star." The group disbanded in 2008 after Collins' departure. In 2013, the original band members reunited for a benefit concert in Boston and toured together until Dean departed for a solo career in 2014.
