The Klezmatics, Pete Seeger & More Perform at Tarrytown's Guthrie Legacy Concert

Legends of folk and klezmer music will perform at Kisses Sweeter Than Wine: The Guthrie Legacy Concert. A benefit concert for the Woody Guthrie Foundation and The Sloop Woody Guthrie, the concert will take place on Saturday April 24th at 8:00 PM at the Tarrytown Music Hall.

The Klezmatics, Work o' the Weavers, Pete Seeger and Fred Hellerman will pay tribute to trailblazing American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie and others that followed in his wake with musical performances throughout the evening. Actor/singer Rob Tepper will perform a scene from "When the Curfew Blows," his one-man-show about Guthrie's life and times and Toronto's Theresa Tova will join Frank London for some contemporary Yiddish jazz. Grammy Award-winning band The Klezmatics are globally-renowned world music superstars. The group's eclectic musical influences combined with their human rights and anti-fundamentalism themes led to their collaboration with The Guthrie Archives. On their CDs "Wonder Wheel" and "Woody Guthrie's Happy Joyous Hanukkah," The Klezmatics set Guthrie's lyrics to music in collaboration with Nora Guthrie.

Comprised of David Bernz, James Durst, Mark Murphy and Martha Sandefer, Work o' the Weavers is a group that recalls the spirit of the original Weavers by providing an echo of their timeless music and some insight into their story. In addition to their interpretations of Weavers material, the group enjoys playing modern music in the Weavers trajectory.

Iconic singer and gifted songwriter Pete Seeger has been making music since the early 1940s when he travelled with Woody Guthrie. As co-founder of the prolific folk quartet The Weavers, Seeger shot to international acclaim with songs like "Tzena Tzena, Tzena" and "Goodnight Irene." Over the years, Seeger's music has been covered by the likes of The Byrds; Peter, Paul and Mary; and Judy Collins. Still performing at age 90, this Voice of Justice and winner of the National Medal of Arts (the highest honor conferred on an individual artist created by the United States Congress and presented by the American President) continues to influence and inspire his 3rd and 4th generation of audiences, activists and luminary musicians alike.

A fellow original member of The Weavers, Fred Hellerman is a singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer. Along with Seeger, Hellerman helped to arrange many of The Weavers' hit songs. He also produced Arlo Guthrie's Thanksgiving anthem "Alice's Restaurant."

The Sloop Woody Guthrie, is a replica of the popular gaff-rigged Hudson River sloop from the days of 70-foot-long booms. For 31 years, the Sloop Woody Guthrie has offered the public free rides and education five evenings a week. Pete Seeger and his wife Toshi had the Woody built to promote the clean-up of the Hudson River and to keep the river open and accessible to everyone. Since its launch date in 1978, the Woody has given thousands of people their first experience on a sailboat as well as their first sights of the Hudson River's surrounding mountains' beauty from the vantage point of the river.
