Minnesota singer-songwriter Peter Mayer, with his "unique and passionate percussive guitar style and lyrics of conscience," performs tonight, May 5 at 8 pm at The Englert Theatre in Iowa City.

Mayer writes songs for a small planet -- songs about interconnectedness and the human journey; about the beauty and the mystery of the world. Whimsical, humorous, and profound, his music breaks the boundaries of "folk", and transcends to a realm beyond the everyday love song, to a place of wonder at the very fact of life itself.

Mayer began his music career in high school, continued studying music along with theology in college and spent two years in seminary. After deciding that the priesthood wasn't for him, he took a part-time job as a church music director, while performing, writing and recording music. In 1995, he started touring full-time. Mayer has gained a dedicated and enthusiastic following, playing shows throughout the country. His CD, Midwinter, was the featured Album of the Month last December on Iowa Public Radio’s “The Folk Tree”.  Described as “an innovative guitarist” and “a master storyteller”, he has nine CDs to his credit.

Ben Schmidt with Larry Mossman open for Peter Mayer. With Ben on guitar and Larry on mandolin, the duo performs an eclectic mix of compositions from ballads to blues.  Inspired from post-flood impressions, Ben’s latest CD, Silt, explores lives of people who have experienced physical, emotional and spiritual personal “storms”, and the aftermath.

Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 at the door, and are available online at englert.org, or by calling the Englert Box Office at 319/688-2653. The Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City delights in sharing these extraordinary performers with support from the Detiger Endowment Fund.
