The video game 'Green Day: Rock Band,' which is the latest installment in the popular Rock Band series, was released today, the official Rock Band website announced.  The game's producers include Harmonix, MTV Games, Reprise/Warners Bros. Records.  Green Day's music is currently featured on Broadway in AMERICAN IDIOT.

Players can play forty-seven songs as vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, or drummer Tre Cool.

"I think people will hopefully be impressed with the pictures and video we've included from throughout our career," said Armstrong.

"We thought we could have a lot of fun making a Rock Band game and highlight different times in our career, since we're using so many songs," said Dirnt. "We just thought it was a cool way to show people something different."

"There will be some people who know every single song on the disc, which is awesome," said Cool. "But for those who don't, it's a great way to discover some of the older material."

The game features songs from multiple Green Day Albums, including 'Dookie,' 'American Idiot,' 'Warning,' 'Nimrod,' 'Insomniac,' and '21st Century Breakdown.'  It also includes bonus images and videos and allows up to three players to sing in harmony.

Green Day - vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool - were kids from working-class backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. They announced their arrival with 1994's 'Dookie', a punk-pop album that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums 'Insomniac', 'Nimrod', and 'Warning', while performing in frenetic live shows. Their greatest success was with their 2004 album 'American Idiot', which has been made into a Broadway musical.  'American Idiot' debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll.  Last year, Green Day released its new album '21st Century Breakdown', which won a 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold "Know Your Enemy," which was the first song ever to top Billboard's Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the platinum "21 Guns," which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. For more about the band, visit www.greenday.com.

The musical AMERICAN IDIOT, which opened in April, has been nominated for three 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design.  It stars John Gallagher Junior, Michael Esper, Mary Faber, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Christina Sajous, Stark Sands, and Tony Vincent.
