Ariel Barnes and Bryan Wagorn Perform at Arts & Letter Club, 4/7
The 60th celebrations of Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JMC), and the 30th anniversary of Jeunesses Musicales Ontario (JMO) continue with Ariel Barnes, cello, and Bryan Wagorn, piano, with a Twilight Series concert taking place at the Arts & Letters Club on April 7 at 6 PM with cocktails starting at 5 PM. The programme: De Falla: "Suite Popular Espanola"; Bartok: "Roumanian Folk Dances"; Canadian composer's Milton Barnes: "La Rosa Variations"; and Schumann: Fünf Stück im Volkston, Op. 102, A minor.
The Twilight Series is an excellent way for music lovers, especially those new to classical music, to check out a concert of chamber music in an intimate setting, at a cost that won't break the bank. Not only does Jeunesses Musicales Ontario develop young talent and provide valuable experience with concertising, touring, and meeting the public, JMO also fosters the love of classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. In particular, this series appeals to the new concert-goers who are discovering classical music and want to learn more, in a setting that is "casual smart".
This evening will feature a pre-concert cocktails gathering for all ticket-holders at 5 PM before the concert start at 6 PM. Post concert, the audience is invited to meet the artists at the Duke of Somerset, around the corner at 655 Bay Street.
Ariel Barnes is one of the country's most promising cellists, and is currently the Principal Cellist in the Vancouver Opera Orchestra. Very much in demand, he has given concerts in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and has been unanimously acclaimed by the press. While he is as protective of his hands as most musicians are, this Vancouverite has a penchant for ice skating at the local rink in North Van, and skateboarding. He is very careful. A graduate of the University of Ottawa, pianist Bryan Wagorn has also appeared in several concerts and at festivals in Canada, Asia, Europe, and the United States. Hailed by Radio Canada as "an exceptional artist", he has appeared at New York's Steinway Hall, Lincoln Center, Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio, and has taught at the National Arts Centre's Young Artist Program. He is an exciting player, and not one for big, flashy, overly ebullient performance gestures.
The last concert of the Twilight Series will feature the piano duo of Janelle Fung and Philip Chiu on May 6. Their programme will feature Tchaikovsky, arr. Langer: Nutcracker Suite Op. 71a; Ravel: Ma Mère L'Oye; Debussy, arr. Ravel: Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune; Stravinsky, arr. Chiu & Fung: Firebird, Danse infernale; George & Ira Gershwin, transcribed by Gregory Stone: Berceuse Finale, and "I Got Rhythm" (Impromptu Variations).
Founded in 1979 Jeunesses Musicales Ontario (JMO), is a non-profit arts organization that fosters the careers of outstanding young professional Ontario and Canadian classical musicians at home and abroad, and promotes the development of the arts in Ontario by bringing affordable classical music to audiences. Jeunesses Musicales Ontario is a branch affiliate of Jeunesses Musicales of Canada (JMC), part of the historic, highly acclaimed international federation known as Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI). The 2009/2010 season marks the 30th anniversary of JMO and the 60th anniversary of JMC
