The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz today announced the 2013 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and All-Star Gala Concert will take place at the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 16. The 2013 Competition and Gala is made possible through generous support from Cadillac, the presenting sponsor for the weekend.This year's Competition will feature 14 of the world's most outstanding young jazz saxophonists who have been selected to perform before a panel of jazz greats including Jane Ira Bloom, Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Wayne Shorter, and Bobby Watson.The Semifinals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition will be held on Sunday, September 15 from noon to 6:00 p.m. at the Smithsonian Institution's Baird Auditorium inside the National Museum of American History. Each semifinalist will perform for 15 minutes, accompanied by Rodney Whitaker on bass, Reginald Thomas on piano, and Carl Allen on drums. Three finalists will be selected to participate in the Competition Finals on September 16 at the Kennedy Center, vying for scholarships and prizes totaling more than $100,000 including a $25,000 first place scholarship and a guaranteed recording contract with Concord Music Group; $15,000 second place scholarship; and $10,000 third place scholarship.

Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition
Since 1987, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz has presented the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, which is recognized as the world's most prestigious jazz competition and for discovering the next generation of jazz masters.
