Los Angeles Philharmonic Association Announces Hollywood Bowl 2010 Summer Subscription Series

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announces the Hollywood Bowl summer 2010 subscription series for its 89th season at the historic venue. The Hollywood Bowl - named "Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue" by Pollstar magazine for the sixth straight year - is one of the most renowned summer cultural venues in the United States and has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1922.

The 2010 summer season spans 14 weeks, from June to September. Highlights include the return of Gustavo Dudamel in his first Bowl subscription concerts as Music Director; presentations of classical music by the Los Angeles Philharmonic with conductors Bramwell Tovey, Leonard Slatkin, Lionel Bringuier and more; popular weekend shows with the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; Jazz at the Bowl concerts including Herbie Hancock's 70th Birthday Celebration; KCRW's World Festival series with Baaba Maal and The Chemical Brothers among others; plus many more artists confirmed for each series throughout the season. The Hollywood Bowl's pop, rock and special presentations bring back annual favorites including the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music; The Big Picture, which this season celebrates the legacy of Twentieth Century Fox; the July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, with special guest Vince Gill; and Opening Night, which honors the newest Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame inductees.

Subscriptions for the Hollywood Bowl 2010 summer season are available starting today. The Hollywood Bowl box office opens for single ticket sales on Sunday, May 2, 2010.

"This summer Gustavo Dudamel returns to the Hollywood Bowl- the place where he made his stunning U.S. debut and led the now legendary Bienvenido Gustavo community concert in his first official act as our Music Director. It is particularly special that in another ‘first' he leads the LA Phil in a concert performance of Bizet's Carmen, his first opera in this country. His presence will be expanded as well when he directs two other programs featuring music from the Americas and Europe. Music Director Gustavo Dudamel

The LA Philharmonic launches its summer classical season under Grant Gershon. Joined by the Los Angeles Master Chorale, where he is celebrating his 10th year as music director, the program features two renditions of the Gloria - by both Vivaldi and Poulenc - Handel's "Hallelujah" Chorus and fireworks. Soloists on this special opening night are soprano Jessica Rivera, soprano Christine Brandes and alto Kelley O'Connor. (July 6)

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos returns to the Hollywood Bowl stage for the first time since 2003 to lead the LA Phil in an all-French program featuring LA Phil Principal ConcertMaster Martin Chalifour performing Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3. The program lineup also includes Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 and Debussy's epic La Mer. The same week, Frühbeck de Burgos and the LA Phil are joined by Hollywood Bowl Hall of Famer violinist Joshua Bell performing Bruch's Scottish Fantasy. That program also includes Mahler's Symphony No. 1. (July 13 and 15)

Conductor Nicholas McGegan returns to the Bowl for a week of Classical Tuesday and Thursday concerts to lead the LA Phil in an all-Mozart program featuring sibling pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque in Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos, K. 365. Also on the program are Thamos, King of Egypt (entr'actes) K. 345 and Symphony No. 36 in C, K. 425, "Linz." (July 20 and 22)

Twenty-eight-year-old French pianist David Fray makes his Hollywood Bowl debut in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. The all-Beethoven program, led by conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, in his Hollywood Bowl debut, also includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, "Eroica." (July 27 and 29)

Returning to the Hollywood Bowl, where he made his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut, for his first Bowl subscription concert as Music Director, Gustavo Dudamel leads the LA Phil in a program which includes Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and selections from Bernstein's On the Town. Dudamel and the Phil are joined by Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero. (August 3)

Dudamel continues his week at the Bowl with a program of dance music from Europe: Enescu's Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, Falla's Three-Cornered Hat Suite No. 2, and Ravel's Bolero, as well as the Americas: Piazzolla's Adios Nonino and Bernstein's Divertimento. (August 5)

Bramwell Tovey, in his third season as Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, leads the orchestra in Smetana's The Bartered Bride Overture; Three Dances and The Moldau. MacArthur "genius" grant recipient, pianist Stephen Hough performs Brahms' First Piano Concerto. Tovey's first of three weeks at the Bowl continues Thursday and is highlighted by the long-anticipated return of pianist Emanuel Ax in Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2, in a program that also includes Dvo?ák's Noonday Witch Op. 108 and selected Slavonic Dances. (August 10 and 12)

Twenty-nine-year-old Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen makes his Hollywood Bowl debut as he leads the LA Phil in Sibelius' Finlandia, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12, K. 414, featuring veteran American pianist Leon Fleisher, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. (August 17)

LA Phil Associate Conductor Lionel Bringuier leads the LA Phil and the Hollywood Bowl return of gifted young violinist Augustin Hadelich, in Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Also on the program are Dvo?ák's Carnival Overture, and Brahms' Symphony No. 1. (August 19)

Former Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl
Leonard Slatkin returns in a week accompanied by two "Hollywood Bowl Hall of Famers" - violinist Sarah Chang and flutist Sir James Galway. Tuesday's concert features Chang in an all-Shostakovich program featuring Tahiti Trot, Violin Concerto No. 1 and the composer's powerful Symphony No. 5. Thursday, Slatkin is joined on the Bowl stage by Galway in a program that includes Mozart's Magic Flute Overture, Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Piston's Incredible Flutist Suite and Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 2. (August 24 and 26)

As the classical summer season winds down, Tovey returns to lead the orchestra and young virtuoso cellist Daniel Müller-Schott in Elgar's poignant Cello Concerto. The program also presents Wagner's Die Meistersinger Prelude and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. The same week, Tovey and the LA Phil present a concert production of Bernstein's comic operetta Candide. (August 31 and September 2)

In the final week of the summer classical season, Tovey and the orchestra welcome 24-year-old pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk making his Hollywood Bowl debut in Tchaikovsky's rarely-heard Second Piano Concerto. Also on the program are Tchaikovsky's Festival Coronation March, Borodin's Polovtsian Dances and Tovey's own Urban Runway, a Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic co-commission. The classical season concludes with the return of Los Angeles' leading dance company Diavolo performing a newly-commissioned world premiere ballet set to LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams' Fearful Symmetries. The program also includes Weber's Invitation to the Dance (orchestrated by Berlioz) and Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. (September 7 and 9)

The Hollywood Bowl's Weekend Spectaculars series offers audiences unforgettable performances by outstanding entertainers from Broadway, Hollywood, pop music and beyond. Concerts in this series are performed by two resident ensembles - the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra - and include nine concerts ending with the dazzling pyrotechnics that have become a Hollywood Bowl tradition.

A Beatles Celebration - Forty-five years after the Beatles rocked the Bowl stage in 1965, and 40-plus years after Let It Be and Abbey Road, we honor their musical history and greatest symphonic moments with conductor Thomas Wilkins, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and special guest vocalists to be announced. (July 9 & 10)

Bugs Bunny on Broadway, the record-setting orchestra-and-film concert that reinvented a new genre of symphony orchestra concert when it debuted in 1990, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a rechristened and newly-created concert sequel, Bugs Bunny at the Symphony. This re-imagined production will add an enlarged "cast" of Warner Bros.' animated characters and cartoons to this celebrated melding of classical music and classic animation. (July 16 & 17)

Planet Earth Live! - Spectacular footage from the celebrated BBC television series Planet Earth is shown in stunning high-definition on the Bowl's big screen, accompanied by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of the series' award-winning composer, George Fenton. Together they take audiences on an epic journey through the earth's most amazing environments, featuring some of nature's most mysterious and beautiful creatures. (July 23 & 24)

Rent - The groundbreaking and socially relevant musical Rent - which had a 12-year run on Broadway with multiple accolades from a Pulitzer Prize to a Tony Award for Best Musical -
graces the Hollywood Bowl stage as our annual, fully-staged production. (August 6 & 7)

Harry Connick, Jr. - From romantic ballads to big band standards to pop classics, Harry Connick, Jr. has become one of America's favorite contemporary artists. In this very special concert with his big band and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he will feature songs from his most recent release, Grammy-nominated Your Songs. (August 13 & 14)

Tchaikovsky Spectacular - The beloved tradition of Tchaikovsky and fireworks returns to the Bowl with the Russian composer's Violin Concerto performed by Baiba Skride in her Hollywood Bowl debut. The night comes to a rapturous end with the 1812 Overture complete with cannons and blazing pyrotechnics. (August 20 & 21)

John Williams - In the world of film music, there is no voice greater than the incomparable John Williams, whose celebrated scores make moviegoers cheer, bring them to tears and keep them on The Edge of their seats. Join us this year as the Bowl Hall of Famer leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in highlights from the Golden Age of Hollywood, as well as some of his own biggest and most beloved hits. (August 27 & 28)

Earth, Wind & Fire - One of the greatest R&B groups of all time perform for the first time ever with full orchestra, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins. This historical performance shows Earth, Wind & Fire bringing the soul and funk that made them legendary. (September 3 & 4)

Fireworks Finale: Pink Martini - From Portland to Paris, Pink Martini takes audiences on an around-the-world adventure full of French, Latin, lounge and jazz music with a vintage soul. This year, they return to the Bowl accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Wilkins and the spectacular sparkle of our fireworks finale. (September 10 & 11)

JAZZ AT THE BOWL

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Creative Chair for Jazz, Herbie Hancock, presents his first jazz series at the Hollywood Bowl with eight concerts featuring jazz legends and rising stars of the genre. Two series of four concerts take place Wednesday nights throughout the summer season.

"I feel so privileged to have been asked to join the LA Phil as Creative Chair for Jazz," says Hancock. "It's an honor to follow in the footsteps of my esteemed colleagues, Dianne Reeves and Christian McBride. I look forward to producing programs at the Hollywood Bowl that are both exciting and creative, and offer new experiences beyond the traditional jazz concert."

· Femi Kuti & The Positive Force, Terence Blanchard with Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Richard Bona - In a unique line-up, the Nigerian Afrobeat superstar, Femi Kuti, returns with his explosive rhythms and invigorating dancers, while superlative jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard and modern dance troupe LWDT explore a completely new work together. Bassist Richard Bona opens the show. (July 7)

· Smokey Robinson - Multiple award-winner, King of Motown singer/songwriter Smokey Robinson makes his Hollywood Bowl debut. Celebrating his 50th Anniversary in the music business and 50 years of Motown, the beloved, satin-voiced vocalist will perform songs from his new CD Time Flies When You're Having Fun, as well as such signature hits as "Tears of a Clown," "Tracks of My Tears," "I Second That Emotion," and more. · Dianne Reeves - Beloved jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves brings specially commissioned arrangements for this night of sophisticated jazz under the stars. (July 21)

· Count Basie Orchestra - A night of big band music featuring the swinging sounds of the Count Basie Orchestra with a modern twist from the Dave Holland and Dave Douglas Big Bands. (July 28)

· B.B. King and Buddy Guy - A night of blues featuring two bona fide titans of the genre. B.B. King, the reigning master of rhythm and blues for over four decades, and Buddy Guy, a pioneer of Chicago blues who influenced rock legends such as Clapton and Hendrix. (August 11)

· Neville Brothers, Preservation Hall Jazz Band & Trey McIntyre Project, Dirty Dozen Brass Band - Celebrate New Orleans' rich heritage with the first family of New Orleans' R&B, the Neville Brothers. Preservation Hall Jazz Band collaborates with the Trey McIntyre Dance Project, tapping into the mystical and magical world of New Orleans. Providing the spirited opening are second line stompers, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. (August 18)

· Herbie Hancock: Seven Decades - The Birthday Celebration - Herbie Hancock, one of the most revered figures in jazz, returns to the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate his 70th birthday with very special guests including Wayne Shorter and others from his eclectic career. His original style has moved effortlessly through almost every development in acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B throughout his career - absorbing blues, funk, gospel, rock and even modern classical influences along the way. KCRW'S WORLD FESTIVAL

KCRW's World Festival celebrates its twelfth season with one-of-a-kind programs showcasing sounds from around the globe. Created in partnership with KCRW, the six Sunday programs highlight established and rising artists from diverse backgrounds.

Baaba Maal, Tinariwen, Fool's Gold
Celebrated Senegalese superstar Baaba Maal delivers a rapturous live set fusing African and Western grooves. Tinariwen, legendary poet guitarists and soul rebels from the southern Sahara desert, make their long-awaited Bowl debut. Also making their debut is Echo Park-based collective Fool's Gold. Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club featuring Omara Portuondo
Celebrating an upcoming release, British group Goldfrapp makes their long-awaited Hollywood Bowl debut with a rush of upbeat synth pop, while Omara Portuondo, the legendary Cuban vocalist from the Buena Vista Social Club (and former dancer and singer at the famed Tropicana Club), performs nostalgic torch songs and salsa rhythms. ¡VIVA MEXICO! With Ozomatli and Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles
In honor of two of Mexico's most important national anniversaries - the 200th anniversary of Mexico's Independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution - the Hollywood Bowl celebrates Mexican Music. Multi-culti L.A. heroes Ozomatli return to the Hollywood Bowl with its socially-conscious mash-up of hip-hop, salsa, cumbia, dub, and funk. America's first all-female mariachi ensemble, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, share their passion for mariachi music with a captivating and expressive performance. (September 19)

Opening Night at the Bowl
The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, led by Thomas Wilkins, kicks off the summer season with the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame concert, now in its 11th year. The program benefits Music Matters, and features performances by this year's Hall of Fame inductees. The star-studded evening concludes with a spectacular fireworks show. (June 18)

The LA Phil, joined by the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets and led by conductor John Morris Russell, treats audiences to a program of inspiring, patriotic music in an evening that includes the Bowl's spectacular fireworks extravaganza. Smooth Summer Jazz
The Bowl's annual contemporary jazz evening presents the rich, soulful sounds of singer Brian McKnight with RNR: trumpet player Rick Braun and saxophonist Richard Elliot; award-winning singer and jazz pianist Patrice Rushen and Friends: MTL Express with saxophonists Marion Meadows, Paul Taylor and Michael Lington; and pianist Spencer Day. The Big Picture - The Films of Twentieth Century Fox
This year, the Hollywood Bowl honors the amazing 75-year legacy of Twentieth Century Fox, which includes films such as Sound of Music, Star Wars and Avatar, with the orchestra performing award-winning scores accompanied by unforgettable scenes projected on the Bowl's big screens. (September 5)

Sing-A-Long Sound of Music
One of the most popular Hollywood Bowl traditions, the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music returns for a one-night-only performance. SUMMERSOUNDS: Music for Kids

Festival of Music and Art at the Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl celebrates its 43rd year of presenting one of the most popular children's festivals in Southern California. The six-week festival of music and arts for children ages 3 to 11 takes place weekday mornings. Beginning on Monday, July 5, 2010, and running until Friday, August 13th, 2010, with two performances each day at 10am and 11:15am, SummerSounds explores world music through creative programs that introduce music and other traditions from different cultures. EDMUND D. EDELMAN HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM
The Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum, located on the grounds of the 88-acre county park, provides a living history of the world-famous venue through a permanent multimedia presentation with themed exhibits updated each season.
Continuing at the Hollywood Bowl Museum this summer is a highly interactive exhibition called SOUNDSCAPE - Hearing Music at the Hollywood Bowl. How can you "see" a sound wave? When you are sitting somewhere in the middle or the top of the Bowl, why is there a delay between the sight of the conductor's baton coming down and what you actually hear? How did people hear the music at the Bowl before microphones and speakers were used? Using hands-on devices developed by the Exploratorium in San Francisco, you will answer these questions for yourself.
· You can talk or sing into the Sound Spectrogram and see a moving picture of your voice.

· You can talk into an Echo Tube swooping 100 feet around the museum.

· You can play the Oscylinder Scope, which explores the nature of sound by directly translating the vibration pattern of musical strings into visible waves.

· You can manipulate sound waves with Visible Effects of the Invisible, where a speaker causes fluid in a tube to vibrate, creating geysers that respond to resonant frequency.

· You can place yourself anywhere in the Hollywood Bowl in a computer simulation demonstrating Speed of Sound.

· You can play the Musical Wall, understanding how strings, winds, and percussion work.

The first floor of the Museum presents Hollywood Bowl: Music For Everyone. Taking its cue from the Bowl's slogan from the 1950s, "Music For Everyone," this ongoing exhibit traces the history of symphonic music, opera, jazz, rock, pop, world music, and dance at the Bowl through sounds and images.

The Museum is located on the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl on Peppertree Lane. Admission is free. THE BOWL WALK
Developed as part of the renovations in the 2004 Hollywood Bowl Shell Project, The Bowl Walk is a 10-station exhibit around the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, a Los Angeles County Park, which beckons visitors to view the venue outside and around the theater. The exhibit features visual displays throughout the park, presenting information on the cultural events, history and architecture of the legendary natural amphitheater. The Walk begins at the entrance of the Bowl (on Peppertree Lane) and concludes inside the theater on the Fourth Promenade at the top of the hill.

Ten photographic displays along the pedestrian walkways guide visitors through the park: The Muse of Music, Peppertree Lane, Pop & Rock at the Hollywood Bowl, Great Performances, The Shell, The Amphitheater, The Cahuenga Pass Treasure, Flora & Fauna of the Hollywood Bowl, Picnics & Fireworks, and The View from the Fourth Prom. Park & Ride ($5-$8) service will be available from 14 convenient locations in the Southland during the Hollywood Bowl 2010 season. Shuttle lots ($4) offer convenient parking at three close-to-the-Bowl locations.

Tickets for the Hollywood Bowl 2009 summer season are currently available online at www.HollywoodBowl.com, via fax, mail, and by phone at 323.850.2000. The Hollywood Bowl Box Office opens for single ticket sales ($1 - $304) on Sunday, May 2, 2010. From May 2 through May 9, box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The box office is closed on May 10. Beginning Tuesday, May 11, summer hours are Tuesday - Sunday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Subscribers enjoy the benefits of priority seating, special discounts, purchasing tickets before the general public, and many others. Purchase five or more concerts and receive benefits which include priority seating and free tickets to a sixth concert for select performances.
