Juilliard String Quartet Feature In Two Metro Detroit Performances, April 12 & 13 The Chamber Music Society of Detroit will present the revered Juilliard String Quartet in two Detroit area performances: on Friday, April 12, 2019 at 8 PM, the Juilliard shares the stage with the award-winning young Argus Quartet at Schaver Music Recital Hall, located at 480 W. Hancock in Detroit. On Saturday, April 13 at 8:00 PM, the Juilliard Quartet will appear on CMSDetroit's Signature Series at Seligman Performing Arts Center, located at 22305 W. 13 Mile Road in Beverly Hills. Tickets for both concerts are available by phone at 313-335-3300 or online at www.CMSDetroit.org.

The Friday night program juxtaposes two Classical era selections, by Haydn and Boccherini, with two works from the modern era, Bart k's String Quartet No. 3 and Eight Colors for String Quartet by Chinese-American composer Tan Dun. To help deepen the audience's understanding of the music on the program, this InDepth format concert will mix performance and post-concert discussion facilitated by writer Mark Stryker, the former long-time music critic of the Detroit Free Press. Tickets are priced at $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $10 for students.

On Saturday, April 13, at 8 PM, the Juilliard will perform Dvo k's American Quartet in F major plus quartets by Beethoven and American composer Lembit Beecher. The Argus Quartet will appear as well, performing Debussy's String Quartet in G minor on a pre-concert recital at 7:00 PM that is open to ticket holders free of charge. Tickets range in price from $20 to $65 for adults and $10 to $32.50 for students.

With unparalleled artistry and enduring vigor, the Juilliard String Quartet continues to inspire audiences around the world. Founded in 1946 and hailed by the Boston Globe as the most important American quartet in history, the Juilliard draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Areta Zhulla joins the Juilliard Quartet as first violinist beginning this 2018-19 season, which includes concerts in Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, London, Oslo, Athens, Vancouver, Toronto and New York in addition to many return engagements across the U.S.

The Juilliard Quartet is known for many landmark recordings, including the complete Elliott Carter String Quartets for Sony Classical. The quartet's recordings of the Bart k and Schoenberg Quartets, as well as those of Debussy, Ravel and Beethoven, have won Grammy Awards, and in 2011 the JSQ became the first classical music ensemble to receive a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

The Argus Quartet, currently serving as the Juilliard School's Graduate Quartet in Residence, has quickly emerged as one of today's most dynamic and versatile young ensembles, winning First Prize at both the 2017 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition, and the University of Michigan's 2017 M-Prize Chamber Arts Competition.

The Argus Quartet's busy 2018-19 season takes them to fifteen states across the U.S., highlighted by debut concerts in New York's Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Concert Hall as well as appearances at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Chicago's Ravinia Festival and Washington Performing Arts (DC). The Argus's CMSDetroit performances are part of a week-long residency for the Chamber Music Society, consisting of educational outreach activities in schools across the metro region.
