Independent Shakespeare Company Wins 2009 Charlie Award

Word was just received that Independent Shakespeare Co. is the recipient of a 2009 Charlie Award! Presented by the Hollywood Arts Council for Excellence in Theater Arts, it is in recognition for both the high-quality of the Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park productions, as well as our service to the community in providing free, classical theater to all. On April 19, they will be presented their award by actress Helen Slater at a black tie event in the restored Hollywood Palladium.

Season planning for Free Shakespeare in Barnsdall Park is well underway. Mark your calendars: The Tempest, Henry V, and Hamlet come to the park starting June 26.

Rehearsals have begun for The Tempest, which promises to add striking new dimensions to their work: joining them in the rehearsal process are circus performer Philip Briggs (of Jumbo Shrimp Circus) and choreographer Laura Karlin (of Invertigo Dance, who last season performed Reveries and Revelries as part of the season's curtain-raiser series). Both of these artists are training them in new skills and they are benefiting from the new perspectives they bring to the conversation about the art of classical acting in the 21st Century.
