Sixteen years after high school graduation, Seela Black is called back to her hometown. Her twin brother, Sam, is in prison. Worse yet, he is gravely ill. As she prepares to leave her two successful businesses behind, Seela cannot help but fear what she will be walking into when she arrives on the island where she grew up.

Connie Dixon's debut novel, "Twelve Sundays: A Novel Based on True Events" (published by Archway Publishing), shares a poignant tale based on the author's life as a woman returns home to help her twin brother find peace and forgiveness inside prison walls.

"It's a novel inspired by my twin brother's last twelve weeks of life. He lived in and out of prison the majority of his life due to his heroin addiction," Dixon explains. "He was shanked in prison and then brought back to life to only suffer miserably for twelve more weeks. His murder in prison was covered up."

Dixon offers an empathetic view of addiction. The narrative casts a light on the flaws of the prison system and its ineffectiveness to offer support to those who live with drug addiction. Ultimately, Dixon hopes the novel will encourage readers to consider fighting for providing rehabilitation to those who need it, rather than keeping them locked in prison.
