Drawing upon his extensive background in both journalism and education, award-winning columnist Tom Tatum crafts a compelling novel that explores the real problems plaguing public education today in "An Educated Guess" (published by AuthorHouse).

A concerned high school teacher, Mitchell Grey, takes a troubled transfer student under his wing as the boy struggles to cope with the mysterious murders of his parents. Along the way, Grey battles an inept bureaucratic system and deals with a trio of classroom bullies while coming to a critical crossroads in his career. In an action-packed finale, Grey uncovers the truth about the strange new kid and finally comes to terms with the broken pieces of his own life.

An excerpt from "An Educated Guess":

"Alex Gaynor took a step closer and peered through the etched glass of the cabinet doors engraved with images of bounding deer. 'Thing is, I got plenty of stuff that belonged to Momma, but this here cabinet and the guns is all I got left of Daddy - besides some pictures, I mean.' She nodded toward the hayride photo. 'After Momma and Mr. Kelso got killed, I put that big padlock on the gun cabinet and hid the key away.'
'Because you don't want anyone stealing the guns?' Grey conjectured.
There was a clatter upstairs as Bobby Blume began his awkward, clumping descent. Alex Gaynor's eyes floated to the top of the steps and back to Grey. 'Because I don't want nobody usin' 'em,' she said softly."

One of the greatest strengths of "An Educated Guess" is its insight. Tatum, teacher for 35 years, brings a sense of authenticity to his characters and their conflicts. He examines the difficulties faced by both teachers and students in public schools today and tempts controversy by exploring what he calls "the dark side" of special education.
