Christmas is celebrated by most countries all over the world. It is the most-awaited event for children as they will most likely get a gift or two from Santa Claus. It will always be a cherished practice that will be handed down from one generation to the next, but what if someone aims to put an end to this tradition? Author D.M. McNamara weaves a compelling tale that will capture the hearts and imagination of children with the first book in her series, "The Girl Who Grants Wishes."

This book tells the story of Lydia, an eleven year old girl who decides to build a snow girl with the help of a speaking Robin. The snow girl is in fact a sacred spirit who accompanies Lydia back to the last London frost fair and subsequently to the edge of the Universe in an attempt to escape "The Cardinal," a fanatical character who wants to abolish Christmas as his hero, Oliver Cromwell, succeeded in doing for a period of six years. Will The Cardinal succeed? Or will Lydia save Christmas and find her way back home?

According to McNamara, people today live in an age where their imaginations are being devalued and things like computer games and videos are taking over their creative mind's freedom to explore this part of the cognitive process. His book attempts to tackle this attack on their imaginations by making "imagination" itself the hero. It also delves into substantial subjects such as spirituality, fanaticism, control, friendship and love.

A complete, outstanding exploration of themes spiritual in a commonplace tradition, "The Girl Who Grants Wishes" will impart an important lesson and teach children about Christmas and the timelessness of faith and love.
