Traveling with a mismatched group of tourists can be daunting, especially when the adventure is set in the wild landscape of the desert.

In "Desert Refuge," the new science-fiction novel by author Cheryl Murphy, we meet a collection of colorful characters that are needing to travel across the fictitious Cham Desert as part of their holiday plans.

After the group decides to take a longer, more exciting path towards their destination, we are presented with nights around the campfire where stories and friendships are shared.

The nightly storytelling is both entertaining and enlightening, but during their daily travels from oasis to oasis, odd, surreal and inexplicable events unfold.

"This story is about relationships," said Murphy. "Each character began having a life of their own and the story kept deciding to go in unplanned directions as I was writing."

During their extraordinary journey, the weary travelers encounter powerful, phosphorescent sentient moths, oases with attitude and diverse wildlife.
