THE VILLAGES, Fla.

"Adventures of a Grenfell Nurse" (published by Xlibris) is a collection of selected adventures of a nurse who spent two years with the Grenfell Mission living in the sub arctic, isolated part of Newfoundland and Labrador during the early 1950s, where travel was primarily by dog sled in the winter and boat in the summer. Some of the adventures included a train wreck, dog sled travel, the delivery of a baby on board a coastal steamship and the 29-day sailboat saga on the Northern Messenger with near-ship wreck, in the treacherous waters around Newfoundland/Labrador in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The book tackles the profound differences between that two-year period and the present day as to the obstacles that hampered the delivery of optimum medical care, such as the isolation, and limited modes of travel and communication systems.

Fast-paced, vivid and compelling, "Adventures of a Grenfell Nurse" takes readers on a journey back to the significant period of transition of the Grenfell Mission in Newfoundland and Labrador and gives readers a look into a slice of history that will probably never be duplicated.
