Congratulations to Richard Ford and Timothy Egan, 2013 winners of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction! Richard Ford won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction for his novel Canada, published by Ecco, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. Timothy Egan won the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction for his book, Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

About the Awards

The Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction were established in 2012 to recognize the best fiction and nonfiction books for adult readers published in the U.S. the previous year. The winners (one for fiction, one for nonfiction) are announced at an event at the ALA Annual Conference; winning authors receive a $5,000 cash award, and two finalists in each category receive $1,500. In 2012, for the inauguration of the awards, publishers will receive 1,000 complimentary seals and may purchase additional seals.

The Shortlist

A shortlist of finalists is announced each May from no more than 50 titles drawn from the previous year's Booklist Editors' Choice and RUSA Notable Books lists.

Who Selects the Winners

The shortlisted authors and eventual winners reflect the expertise of a seven-member selection committee of library professionals from across the country who work closely with adult readers. The annually appointed selection committee includes a chair (Nancy Pearl, 2012-2014), three Booklist editors or contributors, and three former members of RUSA CODES Notable Books Council. The committee members can be found here.
