Printed Matter Opening Satellite Location

Printed Matter, Inc., the world's leading non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of artists' books, announces that it will open its second location in Manhattan's East Village at 38 St. Mark's Pl on June 21, 2018. The new location, Printed Matter / St. Mark's, is in the lobby of the new home of the Swiss Institute, a 7,500 sq ft building designed by Selldorf Architects. The space provides an opportunity for Printed Matter to advance its mission to distribute and promote artists' books to a broader audience in the diverse, culturally rich, and highly-trafficked East Village neighborhood.

Printed Matter / St. Mark's will be brimming with artists books and publications reflecting the breadth of Printed Matter's inventory and mission, and will include independently published bookworks, zines, rare and historical material, along with a selection of artist-made multiples, prints, and posters. The store will also represent Swiss Institute's publishing imprint, as well as feature publications reflecting current exhibitions and programs.

The new Printed Matter outpost will be home to a robust program of public events, including artists' readings and talks, public conversations, panel discussions, and performances. Printed Matter / St. Mark's will act as a springboard, launching new community outreach initiatives, such as the development of educational programs that will reach diverse audiences in the East Village, Chinatown, and the Lower East Side and will include presentations on the history of artists' books and book-making workshops.

"We couldn't be more excited about Printed Matter's new East Village outpost and partnership with the Swiss Institute," said Max Schumann, Executive Director of Printed Matter, Inc. "It presents an amazing opportunity to bring the creative, experimental and critical work being done in the field of artists' publications to a broader audience, which is at the heart of Printed Matter's mission, and expands our commitment to making these experiences free and open to all. I also feel that the shared interests and values of the Swiss Institute and Printed Matter make for an excellent and symbiotic institutional partnering, and the historical resonance of the East Village adds a great finishing touch."

This expansion comes at a time of exciting growth for Printed Matter. To meet the recent resurgence of artist publishing activity, as well as increasing public interest, the organization has more than doubled in size over the last decade, increasing program offerings, staff size, and square footage.

"We are deeply excited to welcome Printed Matter as part of the new SI building on St Mark's," said Swiss Institute Executive Director, Simon Castets. "As a nonprofit dedicated to contemporary forms of expression, SI couldn't dream of a better partner than Printed Matter: more than just a space, we share a commitment to artists' voices and strive to amplify them."

In addition to the Swiss Institute, Printed Matter / St. Mark's is in proximity to a number of important cultural institutions, including The New Museum, Anthology Film Archives, Performance Space New York (formerly PS 122), and La MaMa. In its new location, it will join a strong group of bookstores - including East Village Books, Dashwood Books, Mast Books, and the recently opened Karma Books - that are redefining the East Village as an independent bookstore destination.

Printed Matter / St. Mark's opens on June 21 on the ground floor of the contemporary art nonprofit Swiss Institute's space at 38 St. Mark's Pl, on the corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Pl.
