In May of 2013, the 66th World Health Assembly adopted the World Health Organization's (WHO) Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020, setting four major objectives in motion. One of the objectives calls for more governance for mental health and effective leaders, leaders like Dr. Pamela Smith.

Smith, a psychiatrist and mental health consultant, has coordinated projects in association with the WHO, UNICEF, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the International Medical Corps to provide humanitarian aid to regions of the world in desperate need of mental healthcare. Her new book, "Mental Health Care in Settings Where Mental Health Resources Are Limited: An Easy-Reference Guidebook for Healthcare Providers in Developed and Developing Countries" (published by Archway Publishing), is an essential tool for any field officer or mental health clinic treating patients in developing nations or disaster areas where supplies and resources are limited.

Smith designed "Mental Health Care in Settings Where Mental Health Resources Are Limited" to be concise, user-friendly and easily referenced. The book discusses mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and substance abuse. Smith uses her field experience to help health workers better understand their patients who suffer from ailments caused by traumatic events, such as war and natural disasters.

"The book also communicates how training health workers and raising awareness among other individuals within challenged communities serves as a significant means not only to improving access to care but also to preserving human rights and dignity," Smith adds.

In addition, Smith addresses the state of the mental healthcare field today, citing examples of progress and predicting what the future of global mental health will look like.
