According to the Institute of Aging, there are approximately 40 million Americans who are 65 and older. Nearly, a third of that group - an estimated 11 million - manage their day-to-day care alone. With 15 years of experience working as an advocate for the elderly, Tina Olton has watched as aging residents fight to remain independent, which is often met with disastrous consequences. Olton shares her insight on the labors of aging alone in "Until the Iris Bloom: A Novel."

"Until the Iris Bloom" offers the story of 92-year-old Tidy Bourbon and her fight to maintain the independence she strongly craves. When Tidy's caregiver is arrested, she must learn to survive on her own, despite mounting medical, emotional, and psychological and financial troubles. Based closely on true experiences, "Until the Iris Bloom" provides a poignant perspective on end-of-life considerations and the desire to maintain dignity in the aging process.

"Unfortunately, many people don't realize the struggles faced by our elderly," Olton said. "I feel passionately that we, as a society, need to better understand elder issues and help address them in a compassionate and caring way. Until the Iris Bloom encourages readers to be proactive and aid real individuals in similar situations."
