New Memoir Recounts One Surgeon's Journey 'Fencing with God' Recounting his experiences as both a doctor and a patient, Sidney Kaplan M.D.,F.A.C.S., tells the journey he took to become a surgeon in his new memoir "Fencing with God" (published by Archway Press). According to Kaplan, he was so often in the midst of critical life and death cases, and undergoing major surgical operations as a patient, that he began to emotionally feel that he was in this ongoing "duel" with God. The book is available for purchase at: https://www.amazon.com/Fencing-God-SurgeonS-Duel-Existence-ebook/dp/B07FJL522P.

Primarily focusing on his drive and determination to achieve a medical degree and then become a thoracic surgeon, the book illustrates the difficulty in entering a career as a surgeon and the training that goes into the process. Along with a glimpse into the operating theatre, Kaplan reveals the atmosphere as the surgeon working to save lives, as well as what it is like to be the patient in the same situation.

"Readers should come away with the understanding that surgeons sustain years of intense training and constant learning," Kaplan says. "They are dedicated to the patient's care and recovery, and may well have emotional reactions that are often hidden behind a 'cold' exterior."
