HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.

Author Ngan Ha evokes her can-do spirit to tell her life story in her new memoir, "The Dragon Fruit Orchard" (published by Balboa Press).

Ha grew up in war and turmoil in South Vietnam. As the Vietnam War raged on, Ha saw loss and devastation at every turn. Her only chance at having a happy, stable life was to flee to the United States, where she could practice medicine.

The U.S., however, was not quite the haven Ha was expecting. Upon her arrival, she experienced severe culture shock and struggled to adapt to her new home. With perseverance and a desire to succeed, Ha completed her medical training and later adopted an infant from her homeland, creating the family she'd always wanted.

"The Dragon Fruit Orchard" captures the male-dominated culture of the Vietnam Ha experienced and compares it with the "anything-goes" culture in the U.S. Through her story, Ha hopes to inspire readers to pursue their own dreams.

An excerpt from "The Dragon Fruit Orchard":

"Lo and behold, several months later, he called me about a newborn girl who had just been given away by her birth mother to a convent near his parish. I asked if the nuns in the convent could send me a photo of the child, and it came a week later. I was drawn to the chubby face with large black eyes and a calm expression."
