Author D.N. Higa offers children an enjoyable tale in her debut book, Musubi Mouse. The amusing storyline emphasizes the important role of friends in life. When a mouse with a big appetite for rice balls realizes his rice bag is empty, his colorful friends lead him on a fun-filled adventure. The surprising ending underscores the value of good friends.

"Have you ever heard of a mouse who loves to eat rice balls?" Meet Musubi Mouse, a dapper, bespectacled mouse who lives so high up in the clouds, he must get there by elevator. Named after the rice ball, he loves rice balls of all kinds. In fact, it would be safe to say that this roly-poly mouse is a bit of a rice ball addict. Mortified when he runs out of rice on a holiday when the stores are closed, he calls his friends, Bernie the Barnhouse Rat and Johnny the Yellow Tailed Cat, to see if they have any rice he could borrow, but they don't. Musubi Mouse is reluctant to say yes when Sachiko Mouse invites him to her house for dinner because he knows she doesn't eat rice. But he is in for a big surprise when he accepts her invitation.

Young children will enjoy this cheerful, whimsically illustrated tale and parents will appreciate the lessons of friendship and helping others.
