Author Mary-Christine Hennessy reaches out to children afraid of the dark and shows them all the ways that darkness makes life brighter in her illuminating new children's book, "My Hidden Friend" (published by AuthorHouse).

One bright day, Jason and Juliet set out to explore in the woods and investigate all that nature has to offer. When they hear the sound of weeping nearby, the two friends follow the sound to a cave, where they find Darkness, sitting alone in tears.

Darkness explains to the children that he's crying because everyone is afraid of him, but Jason says he's not afraid and wants to be friends with Darkness. That's when Darkness explains to Jason and Juliet that he's been their friend all along.

Hennessy's black-and-white illustrations accompany the text as Darkness tells the children how he's there to be a friend. He shows them how he helps them see the moon and stars at night and how he makes the city shine and fireflies glow bright.

"There are always kids who fear the dark, no matter where or when," Hennessy says. "Can you make friends with Darkness too?"
