New Autobiography Reflects on the Struggles of Growing up in a... In Lucy Wu Mainer's new biography, "My Three Childhoods: Through Life, Love, and Liberation" (published by Archway Press), Mainer chronicles her life as a child escaping a war and an immigrant adjusting to life in new countries. Mainer grew up during the Sino-Japanese War, World War II and the Chinese civil war in the late 1940s; her family escaped to Taiwan before she eventually moved to the United States to further her education.

The book recounts Mainer's experiences that included her having to face adult responsibilities at a young age, complete a challenging education while being torn from home to home, making it to America, facing language challenges, and eventually making it to retirement and recapturing the childhood she never had. Mainer says studying hard, working hard and playing hard, while maintaining a positive attitude, is what helped her survive her harrowing childhood experiences.

In "My Three Childhoods," Lucy shares the secret ingredient needed to overcome hardship, find passion and overcome challenges.
