It is very important to read to children; it stimulates their minds, nurtures their imaginations, and instills values and life lessons into their developing consciences. The ritual of the bedtime story is crucial to this. In her vividly illustrated picture book, Nancy Rutledge tells a particularly unique bedtime tale about a child looking for a place where he can go to bed, asking, "Where Can I Sleep?".

Rutledge's tale portrays a boy who considers many places he might sleep and the attendant drawbacks, and engages young readers - who can easily relate to the boy's tale - to imagine and participate in the story. The child tries out a variety of potential sleeping spots, from bear dens, to gardens, to a bathtub, but they are not comfortable enough for him. He is given a choice to pick out one of the many options available to him, to make his own independent decision, while he seeks a safe, secure and comfortable place to stay for the night. When he makes his choice, both the boy and the readers following his tale will learn a valuable lesson - namely, the consideration of options, and how to choose what is best for one's self.

Simple, yet ingrained with an important life lesson, Where Can I Sleep? makes for an ideal bedtime story for parents to share with their children. With her book, Rutledge uses her experience as a college instructor, parent and grandparent to full effect by instilling a positive message to young readers everywhere.
