Author Corrado Pirzio-Biroli reveals to readers the European history after Bismarck and the biography of Grand Admiral von Tirpitz. "My Great-Grandfather Grand-Admiral von Tirpitz: German Leader after Bismarck and before Hitler" (published by Archway Publishing) is a reminder that imperialism and nationalism are anti-chambers of war and that the prejudice, paranoia and vanity of certain leaders can lead to arbitrary decisions that are contrary to the interests of ordinary citizens, let alone the leaders themselves.

The book contains much that a work of historical summary must have, but there are also charming memoirs from the author's grandmother, the formidable Ilse von Tirpitz who married Ambassador Ulrich von Hassell (1881-1944). It apportions blame for World War I and assesses the fallout: it finally deals with the aftermath, in particular Tirpitz's leading role in the Weimar Republic up to his death in 1930. It also includes Tirpitz's letter exchange with his daughter and with General von Stosch and the reports of Wolf von Tirpitz (son of the Admiral) about his four meetings with Winston Churchill and about the launch of the Battleship von Tirpitz under Adolf Hitler's watch.

Insightful and illuminating, "My Great-Grandfather Grand-Admiral von Tirpitz: German Leader after Bismarck and before Hitler" deals with all aspects of public affairs affecting governance in war and peace during the period - historical, institutional, economic, societal, geostrategic, diplomatic and psychological. The author "personalizes" the history of the period, underlining the strategy, bureaucratic infighting and overall role of Tirpitz's extraordinary personality whose advice, if it had been accepted by Kaiser Wilhelm II, would according to Churchill have changed the outcome of World War I.
