Walnut Creek, CA

When author Milan E. Wight's son Norm decided to hike Stock Trail near Donner Lake in Truckee, California, he was surprised to find "private property" signs. A private citizen had purchased the land Stock Trail ran through and prohibited hikers from coming onto his land.

Wight knew this was a public trail and sought the help of local officials. What followed was a battle for a public trail, documented in Wight's new book, "Historic Donner Stock Trail - 2007 -" (published by Trafford Publishing).

Over the course of three and a half years, Wight, a Trails and Bikeways Advisory Committee member and hike master with the Boy Scouts of America, would advocate for right to hike on Stock Trail. His book covers the founding of the Stock Trail Advisory Committee and the $3.1 million settlement that would finally open the trail to the public.

Wight has lived at Donner Lake for 10 years and includes hiking and historical knowledge of the area. Through his book, he aims to show how citizens can make a difference.

Wight adds, "I want the readers to realize they have the power to protect historical places from commercial exploitation."
