Aurora, Colo.

Michael Sargent Martin's father, Harold Martin, survived service in the Eighth Air Force during World War II- a significant feat given the injured numbered more than 47,000 with roughly 10,000 deaths for their numbered air force alone. Michael Martin's new book, "Steel Fortress: The Memoir of an American Airman in Europe, 1944" (published by Abbott Press), tells Tech. Sgt. Harold Martin's story as a top turret gunner on a B-17.

"Steel Fortress" combines historical facts and mission details from official archives with the stories Harold Martin left behind, bringing to life a unique time in American history from the perspective of someone who lived it. Michael Martin hopes that his novel will serve as a tribute to the memory of his father who passed away in 2008, and to all of the men who flew in the European theater of World War II.

"'Steel Fortress' speaks to the strength of will to overcome hardship, and to the virtues of love, honor and duty," Michael Martin writes. "It's about finding faith. It's about the resilience of the human spirit. It is a personal journey, as there is a face behind the images of war."
