Picayune, Miss.

Author Mavis E. Smith follows up her first book about the adventures of two dogs, Ace and Bubba, with her new children's book, "Inspector Ace and Sergeant Bubba: Book 2" (published by Trafford Publishing).

"Most children love animal stories," Smith says. "Through my stories, I attempt to illustrate to children the way to act with friends or children who are not quite like themselves."

Ace's owner finds a little lost puppy named Missy. They soon discover that Missy can't understand anything Ace and Bubba say because Missy can only speak Spanish. The two dogs team up to teach Missy English, and along the way, they learn Spanish. Smith hopes children will see that they should embrace friends of all different backgrounds.

An excerpt from "Inspector Ace and Sergeant Bubba":

"Ace lay down in the back of the car so the little puppy would not feel so threatened by his size. He said, 'Are you lost, puppy?' But the little puppy just whined a crying noise and wouldn't speak.
Oh golly, wait till Sergeant Bubba sees what I have here, thought Inspector Ace. Maybe we can track down its owner. That sounds like so much fun. Bubba said he was bored, but not for long when we get home."
