The Defense Manpower Data Center states that there are over 3,000,000 people actively involved with the U.S. military. Many of these people have families who are forced to alter their living arrangements in order to survive.

Author Madeleine Carroll spent over 20 years as a Navy wife and another 20 years as a soldier's mother, making her more than familiar with the necessity of acclimating to a non-traditional family format. Her experiences have inspired her new book, "The Dead Cattle Ranch Mystery."

"The Dead Cattle Ranch Mystery" follows a young boy who has to move with his mom onto his grandpa's ranch out west, as his father leaves for active duty. He must abandon his city ways and take on the duties of the ranch in order to discover the cause of the mysterious cattle deaths.

"I want my book to help children realize that the change in their family set-up will not be the end of the world," Carroll said, "I want them to be inspired to take the challenge head-on and gain some strong morals in the process."

With a "Hardy Boys"-style curious sense of investigation, "The Dead Cattle Ranch Mystery" addresses many issues facing children today such as bullying, an over-reliance on technology and the misconceptions kids have about older generations.
