William R. Hearst III, no stranger to the worlds of publishing or the arts, is combining his love for both in his paean to California, a new publication called Journal of Alta California. Alta is a vibrant new print and online magazine that will also hold a series of events bringing together the best thinkers on California and current issues.

The magazine will appear on newsstands, at book stores and at grocery stores throughout California beginning today, with a cover price of $5.99. Subscriptions to the quarterly also are available, for an introductory price of $11.99 per year.

Alta provides a fresh, smart take on the issues, culture, personalities, politics, lifestyle, culture and history of California, featuring some of the state's best writers, photographers and illustrators. The magazine's website, altaonline.com, provides a daily guide to the best writing about the state from Alta and other sources.

The first issue of Alta features Frank Gehry on its cover, interviewed by Hearst. Other stories in the debut issue include an examination of the roots of sexism in Silicon Valley, a story on actresses and their lifestyle brands, and an Indiana Jones-like tale of a William Randolph Hearst-sponsored expedition to bring Arabian horses from the Middle East to California after World War II.

Will Hearst is actively involved in leading the magazine and has brought on veteran journalist and entrepreneur Mark Potts as managing editor. Potts has been an editor, executive and consultant for many leading media and digital companies, including The Washington Post, the San Francisco Examiner, Variety and digital startups in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. The magazine's creative director is John Goecke, who has created designs for many newspapers, magazines and digital companies. Hearst is self-publishing the magazine; the Hearst Corp. is not involved in Alta.

"Many people have often wondered why there is not a literate magazine counterpoint to the New Yorker from a Western point of view," Will Hearst said. "Alta will fill that gap. So many industries and innovations have come from here-Hollywood, Silicon Valley, the environmental movement, the Beat Generation-and I want to celebrate that."

Revolutionary thinkers, radical movements, innovators of our time - these are what California stands for. Alta is bringing these ideas to the fore, providing a fresh take on everything that is California.
