Philadelphia

The Iraq War had a much larger effect on the U.S. military than just mass casualties. According to the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs did a study in 2009 and estimated that about 20 percent of Iraqi War veterans were affected by post-traumatic stress disorder.

Gerard R. D'Allesio's new novel, "Iraq Dreams," tells a compelling story about an Army reservist who loses his leg in Iraq and comes home to a mountain of battles, including one with post-traumatic stress disorder.

The main character, Rick Garcia, has enough trouble overcoming his own issues that he finds the biggest difficulty lies in trying to save his family. D'Alessio, a retired psychologist, hopes to bring to light the unnecessary hardships veterans and their families have to face in readjusting to civilian life after returning from war.

"In the course of my professional career as a psychologist, there were some individuals I had the privilege of working with whose stories have stuck with me," D'Alessio said. "I was often impressed with the horror of the situations that they had to deal with and the courage they showed in fighting through their difficulties."
