JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 28, 2017 /PRNewswire/ Former Congressman Jason Altmire (D-PA), who during his time in Congress was rated the most centrist member of the entire House of Representatives, will be releasing a new book on October 3, 2017, discussing the epidemic of polarization that has gripped the country. In the book "Dead Center: How Political Polarization Divided America and What We Can Do About It," published by Sunbury Press, Altmire explores surprising scientific research into the way partisans think, combined with a critical look at the commonly cited causes of political polarization, such as gerrymandering, partisan media, and campaign finance. He uses behind-the-scenes anecdotes from his career in Congress to supplement those themes, and offers politically realistic solutions to help bridge America's partisan divide.

A member of the congressional Class of 2006 that gave Democrats the House majority, Altmire discusses the reasons for the electoral success of that class, as well as the mistakes that were made which led to the Democrats' crushing loss four years later. He translates that experience and the research outlined in the book into a discussion of what to expect in the 2018 midterm elections and beyond. Altmire also discusses the changing politics in the Rust Belt region in which he served, and the impact of that change on congressional and national elections going forward.

According to Kirkus Reviews, Altmire's observations about "his participation in the historic vote on the Affordable Care Act is one of the highlights of the book." Altmire gives readers an exciting insider's perspective of the lobbying and pressure tactics that were used to woo congressional centrists during the debate on the landmark legislation.

Former Congressman Altmire is available for interviews and comment about the book.
