Author Gary Alan Dorris grew up in Zeigler, a small town in southern Illinois and graduated from Southern Illinois University. He was commissioned as an Air Force officer and left active duty in 1970 as a captain. He began a banking and finance career in Spokane, Wash., and later moved to Scottsdale to become president of a bank holding company. The retiree and his wife, Kay, his high school sweetheart, live in Scottsdale. They celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
