NEW YORK, Dec. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ Do you know an amazing Grandma? From Queen Elizabeth to Tina Turner, Marian Robinson to Hillary Clinton, and even the dynamic duo in the Netflix hit series Grace and Frankie, more and more grandmothers are breaking age-old stereotypes. Besides being strong and active role models, many are also exceptionally involved in the lives of their grandchildren.

A new award-winning children's storybook app, Grandma's Great Gourd, available on the AppStoreand currently a featured app at the Google Play Family Storein the US, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain, celebrates one such spunky grandma!

"I am very excited to see this wonderful interactive story app," says author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, whose picture book, Grandma and the Great Gourd: A Bengali Folktale, the app is based on. The picture book has won a Kirkus Reviews Best Children's Book award. "The app teaches and engagesand is downright fun. It also celebrates Grandmothersin many languages. What more can one ask for!"

The app features a gutsy, South Asian grandma who travels through the jungle near her home in the Sundarbans Forest in Bengal, tricking animals and using her wits to avoid all kinds of trouble, proving that even grandmas can still have adventures.

Sandhya Nankani, the app's publisher and founder of the company Literary Safari, was inspired to adapt this story into an app by the grandmothers in her own life. "I owe so much to my own mother and grandmother. My mother is one of the 2.7 million grandparents here in the US who is helping to raise her grandchildren and I myself was raised by my grandmother in India from the age of 6 to 11," says Nankani.

The accolades for Grandma's Great Gourd are rolling in. Tech with Kids gave the app a Best Pick App Award in November 2016 and Common Sense Media has added the app to its "Best Book Apps for Kids" list, calling the app "an engaging story with beautiful graphics about a strong-willed and clever grandma." The app was also featured during the month of November in the "Kids Apps & Games We Love" category in the Apple AppStore.

Literary Safari's apps support American Academy for Pediatrics 2016 guidelines for screen time for young children and families, which recommend "co-viewing as the norm." All of the company's award winning educational apps (including its literacy and storytelling game HangArt, which Common Sense Media and Understood.org recently featured in a "6 New Apps for Children with Learning and Attention Issues" list) encourage parents and families to play together.

As generations come together during the holidays, Grandma's Great Gourd will make a great addition to those omnipresent tablets and phones and offers multiple opportunities for families to turn screentime into family time. The app itself features a story studio where children and caregivers can record their own voices and sound effects in different languages, a video library where they can explore the art, food, wildlife, and clothing of South Asia, and a gourd tossing physics-inspired game created with input from STEM educators affiliated with the American Museum of Natural History and the New York Hall of Science. The app requires no WIFI access and has no advertising and is great for travel. The app's creators will be launching a free "Things to Do with Grandma" activity guide for the holidays (available at www.grandmasgourd.com), full of games and activities for children and families to play, learn, and tell stories together
