Former Sheriff Dan Hintz Pens Memoir About His Life and Career in Law Enforcement

TAMPA, Fla., July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ Law enforcement officers have the toughest job in America: keeping the public safe in a crime-ridden society. From December 1967 to January 1987 Dan Hintz was one of those officers.

Dan's memoir, In Pursuit of Justice, is a collection of short stories that reflect a humble and often tragic childhood on a small farm in Shantytown, Wisconsin. The book also depicts a 19-year law enforcement career that ran the gamut of bizarre and dangerous circumstances. Some of those circumstances included mysterious deaths and shocking murders, heartrending suicides, unusual medical emergencies, beer-soaked bar brawls, creative drug trafficking, illicit liaisons, smart-mouthed wiseguys, an unrepentant bully, violent racial incidents, masturbation gone wrong and a sex-crazed, drug-fueled rock festival from a bygone era, just to name a few.

As the sheriff of Portage County, Wisconsin, Dan Hintz directed Operation Clean Sweepthe removal of domestic terrorist organization Posse Comitatusputting an exclamation point on an eventful law enforcement career. The Posse, whom the FBI described as "one of the first organized manifestations espousing racial supremacy, but primarily focused on opposition to the federal government," had threatened to kill government officials, law enforcement officers and innocent citizens. In a display of strength and courage, Hintz led more than 250 law enforcement officers in the charge to remove the racist, anti-government terrorists from their militia-style compound in rural Tigerton Dells, Wisconsin.

Dan Hintz served two years in the U.S. Army, including a stint as a communications specialist in South Korea near the Demilitarized Zone. Returning home to Wisconsin in the late sixties, he fulfilled his dream of working in law enforcement serving as police chief in the Village of Plover and as a deputy and sheriff in Portage County. Hintz was president of the Badger State Sheriffs' Association and the Wisconsin Sheriffs' and Deputy Sheriffs' Association, and was elected northeast area director of mutual aid by the sheriffs and chiefs of police of the state of Wisconsin.
