More than five million Americans live with Alzheimer's, according to data collected by the Alzheimer's Association. Caring for someone affected by Alzheimer's disease - the sixth leading cause of death in the United States - is the topic of Edwina Marino's new memoir "Alzheimer's Through Tears and Laughter: Diary of a Caregiver" (published by AuthorHouse).

Journaling her time spent caring for her sister-in-law, Marino tells the true story of her experience treating the disease. She feels too many people associate Alzheimer's with insanity - something she believes is unfair to those afflicted by it.

"Some people are very reluctant to talk about their loved one," Marino says. "Others don't even want to discuss the illness. I want to say there is no great shame in (having) Alzheimer's disease."

Marino hopes people, after reading her book, will have "less fear of the patient" and more interest in caring for those with Alzheimer's.
