Dr. Condoleezza Rice is best known as the first African-American woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State and the first woman to serve as national security advisor. Now she is heralding her latest book, "Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom," with a book signing event for fans and bibliophiles. Admirers of Dr. Rice are invited to the Brookwood Village Books-A-Million on Monday, May 15 at 10:30 a.m. for the opportunity to meet the legend and receive an autographed copy of this notable book.

"Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom" looks at the global struggle for democracy and why America must continue to support the cause of human freedom. Dr. Rice shares insights from her diverse experiences as a policymaker, scholar and citizen in order to put democracy's challenges into perspective.

Today, more than half of all countries qualify as democracies and that number will continue to increase. However, the road to democracy is long and nothing ever comes easy. Using the template of America's long struggle, Rice draws lessons for democracy from around the world. By comparing different countries and their paths to a people-focused leadership strategy, "Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom" illustrates how pathways diverge and, occasionally, countries circle backwards. Timeframes for success vary dramatically and countries often suffer false starts before getting it right. In this insightful book, Rice argues that trying and failing are not grounds for surrender and, while ideal conditions for a democracy are taught through academics, they never exist in the real world. The question this work presents is not how to create perfect circumstances, but rather how to move forward under difficult ones.

Political science buffs can pre-order "Democracy: Stories from the Long Road to Freedom" through the Books-A-Million website at booksamillion.com and are encouraged to purchase tickets leading up to the event at drricebam.eventbrite.com.
