Daniel D. Hartzler's New Book Shares More Information on American Swords

Author Daniel D. Hartzler believes there has yet to be a leader or driving force to organize sword makers into a geographical area of production. Because of this, he was prompted to write "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords Volume II," (published by Xlibris) in which he takes an in-depth look at American swords, where, how and why they were manufactured.

This book grants readers and sword enthusiasts an opportunity to observe edged weapons, made, for the most part, in the United States, that display regional characteristics that often transcend state lines. The makers of these swords, many of whom were silversmiths, had learned the skills and peculiarities of their masters during apprenticeship before yielding to the desires of the shop owner as journeymen. Later, many of them often relocated to new localities, practicing their former traits before they could open their own establishments, where they would be free to exercise their own creative talents.

"Most of the material in this book is based on new research that has not previously been available," Hartzler says. "It includes 673 makers in two volumes of 21 chapters, 799 total pages and 700 photographs reflecting the manufacturing quality of personal military weapons that were used in our country's rich history."

With his publication of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords Volume II," Hartzler hopes readers will be able to see the regional information and appreciate the individual characteristics which were present in the artistry found in American swords.

Daniel D. Hartzler was born and raised in New Windsor, Maryland. He is a fourth generation funeral director with two funeral homes in Carroll County and two in Frederick County. He has enjoyed doing extensive research which has led to the publication of 20 books. Their topics include arms makers, clock makers, tomahawks, Civil War medicine and many others related to the Civil War.
