In the new book, "The First Peace; My Search For The Better Angels" (published by AuthorHouse), author Charles Wilson Hatfield attempts to distinguish and reconcile religion, belief, faith, knowledge, truth, honesty and God.

"The First Peace; My Search for the Better Angels" is Hatfield's memoir and as such, contains experiences to which many readers may relate - experiences with and within the military, seminary, birth, death, marriage, divorce, three Christian denominations and a monastery. Due to his father's service in the military, Hatfield enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for a year before receiving an honorable discharge as a conscientious objector. He went back to school and met and married his wife, but they were only together for eight years, the marriage ending in divorce shortly after the birth of their daughter. Hatfield also spent time in seminary school seeking a degree of divinity and made annual retreats to the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky the oldest monastery in the U.S.

Hatfield shares his own experiences looking for, erroneously and unsuccessfully, purpose, meaning and understanding in human institutions, especially religious and governmental institutions. The overarching theme of "The First Peace; My Search for the Better Angels" is his question: "what do we do when we evolve beyond the 'faith of our fathers and mothers,'" as he explains how religious beliefs and dogma may become a barrier to faith and understanding.

An excerpt from "The First Peace; My Search For The Better Angels":

"Contentment begins with knowing what we can change. Contentment -the First Peace - perfects perception, which perfects intention, which perfects choice, which perfects action, which perfects humanity, which perfects the world."

It is Hatfield's hope that readers will come away from "The First Peace; My Search For The Better Angels" with faith enough in themselves to become self-reliant. "Faith in God without faith in one's self is impotent," he writes. "Everyone is responsible for their own respective lives and actions."
