David and Danny Brannigan lead moderately successful and innocent lives in Australia. That is, until Danny is murdered and David is pinned for the crime. Through a combination of bad police work and lack of evidence, David is believed to be responsible for his brother's murder, and is forced to flee to North Queensland. While on the lam, David works with a fishing crew for 10 years, which gives him a sense of stability and safety - for a while.

David's illusion of safety is shattered however, when Danny's assailants catch up with him, and assault him into a coma. Upon recovering from his coma, David receives help from one of his nurses as he runs from his attackers and a detective with a chip on his shoulder.

Touching on drug trafficking and the violence it causes, police drama and even a bit of romance, "The Cooktown Grave" aims to entertain readers.

Carney Vaughan has worked as a building laborer, swung a hammer in a Cape Otway quarry, dove for abalone off the Victorian Coast, trawled for prawns in the waters of the Torres Strait and chased banana prawns in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Vaughan and his wife, Bev, have retired and live in Thirroul, New South Wales, Australia. They have two children and two grandchildren.
