Caregiver Shares Guidebook for Caring for Elders with Dignity

The number of Americans, age 65 and older, is projected to more than double, from 46 million to over 98 million, by 2060, according to the Population Reference Bureau. With the average U.S. life expectancy having increased more than ten years since 1950, more and more Americans need assistance and care as they age.

"Caring for Caring: An Enriching, Kindhearted, Ethical Journey with Our Elders," by Jane Edwards is a guidebook for caring for elders, while respecting and empowering them to live as independently as possible, from a seasoned caregiver.

"I was raised in a large farmhouse," Edwards said, "that included my immediate family, as well as two grandmothers and a great-aunt. I was taught to honor my elders and respond to their needs cheerfully, regardless of what I thought about any requests. I was raised with a rich respect for elders, which has carried through my adulthood and career."

Edwards has been caring for the elderly for more than 45 years and founded the home health care agency, Caring for Caring Agency, more than 20 years ago.

"Observing the treatment of elders in their homes caused me to create an agency that empowers, respects and honors our elders;" Edwards said, "which is as it should be."
