According to author and long-time hockey coach Bob de la Salle, expectations of beginner hockey players are too high - a transition period is missing from the time a player puts on that first pair of skates to that first hockey game.

In de la Salle's new book "The Hockey Method: Beginner Skating - Beginner Puck Control (For Parents and Instructors)" (published by Trafford Publishing), the Canadian coach shows readers a methodology with an analytical approach for filling in this missing gap in hockey development.

"The Hockey Method" consists of two parts: Book 1, Beginner Skating; and Book 2, Beginner Puck Control. These two parts present 31 skill concepts - or levels - that are easy to learn and can be taught by parents who can't skate or by older siblings who can.

By defining skill levels similar to swimming lessons that can be graded to track player proficiency, "The Hockey Method" will help beginner skaters and hockey players with one-on-one direction and instruction for the approximate 300 drills involved.

"Parents and instructors can learn to record and grade basic skating skills in a progressive, documented structure," de la Salle says. "Rather than trying to teach thousands of drills randomly, this is a structured method of grading and documenting basic skating and puck handling skills that build on each other to actually develop the more difficult skills needed."
