Bob Campbell Releases Memoir, GIANTS LEAP

Author Bob Campbell is a passionate man. He lives his life to the fullest, with intensity and without holding back. He gives everything to all his endeavors. In his publication, he chronicles his life with all its diversity from childhood to adulthood and what has become of him now. "Giants Leap" is a personal memoir describing his journey from a violent, underprivileged youth of institutions and deprivation to trade union activism and the communist party to teaching and successful career as an entertainer, writer, teacher and musician.

A violent childhood of poverty, Catholic Church hypocrisy and alienating experiences in institutions, low paid jobs and family tragedies have catapulted Campbell towards left wing political causes and a quest for social justice, placing him squarely in the middle of the social movements of the sixties and seventies. In this revealing book, he talks about his experiences which centered on trade union and Communist Party activism in the industrial city of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley region.

This is his intellectual journey. Through blind rebellion to the embracing of left wing ideology, to the eventual rejection of rigid dogma and the growing philosophy centered on human compassion and environmental concern, his story is punctuated with twenty two songs and poems he has written. The author tried to relate the stories with a humorous tone, highlighting the many ironies and hypocrisies that punctuated his life.

About the Author

Bob Campbell is a teacher, songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist specializing in traditional fiddling who has made many recordings, stretching back to his first vinyl with Larrikin Records in 1987. His songs and music have featured at festivals, on radio and television and even Qantas in-flight music. He spent much of the 90s performing in Germany and Ireland before returning to his bush home near Gulgong in 1997 to work as an environmental educator, a position from which he retired in 2009.

Since his first published poem appeared in the NSW Teachers paper, 'Education' in 1974, he has written numerous articles for various publications and his poems and songs appear throughout his many recordings. He made regular contributions to the folklore magazine 'Stringybark and Greenhide' from 1979 to 1984 and in 2001 his song, 'The Lark' was published in the hardcover publication 'The Turning Wave', an anthology of Irish influenced poetry compiled and edited by Colleen Z Burke & Vincent Woods.
