A teenager named Amber and her dad are among the people of the Safe Zone, who dwell inside a walled citadel with limited technology and new castes of Warriors, Meds, Elders and so forth. Despite the jarring change to a new society in the wake of the lycanthropic disaster, Amber still has the same feelings (a crush on sexy John, a rivalry with sleek Korreen and gossip about her seeing young Kiler) that any teen from before the cataclysm would have.

One fateful day, the young Warriors are sent by their Elders on a dangerous mission to the outskirts of Denver in search of vital supplies. During the journey into the abandoned city, they face rotting demi-werewolves and Amber's long-lost brother, Cory who is now a werewolf. A series of even more shocking encounters leads to devastating revelations about where the werewolves come from. It shattered possibilities about the future of the ruined world. Now, Amber is forced to fight loved ones she had thought gone forever and must wrestle with the strange new odyssey that she is forced to undertake.
