The United States Merchant Marines took a lead role in the country's war efforts during the Second World War. They lost the most lives among any other branch of the military. Yet, only over half a century later, their sacrifice seemed to have gone to smoke, slowly fading from the annals of history and reminisced only by their scant survivors. It is this sentiment that motivated author and Merchant Mariner veteran himself, Bernard F. Flynn to pen down "Bargain Basement War Heroes" (published by AuthorHouse) as a tribute to the men and women who fought with their lives in battle.

"Bargain Basement War Heroes" is a first-hand account of the struggles that Merchant Mariners went through during the war. It chronicles the institution of the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point New York which is now considered a hidden treasure of the American federal academies, shares stories from the battlefield and tackles various issues that a Merchant Marine encountered decades after their bravery was no longer required. It does more than just rock the boats but open a can of worms that might cause squirming in high places past, present, or future.

Told with an unflinching voice, this vivid portrayal of Merchant Mariners commemorates their courage and the great part they have played in the freedom that Americans enjoy today. It is also a dedication to the modern day youth about the history they have never witnessed but will always be a part of.
