Santa Claus: Hero or Villain? A beloved 1600 year old Christmas custom is in danger, according to a recent survey of Christians which showed that only 45% believe that it is OK to celebrate the tradition of Santa Claus (ChristiaNet.com) for two reasons: Many feel that Santa Claus contributes to an increasingly consumerist culture; others don't see a connection between him and Jesus and think he detracts from the true meaning of the holiday.

With this in mind, Author Tamara Amos, who has a BA in Theology and a background in ministry, wrote Gift of a Servant which has won thirteen awards and is receiving rave reviews for offering a different approach to Santa Claus.

Christian blogger and book reviewer, Cindy Navarro says, "In a culture that is becoming increasingly commercial, the birth of the Christ Child and the gift He is to each of us is getting lost. Some want to ignore or downplay that Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ and there are others who want no hint of Santa in the message of Christmas and see him as a form of adversity. Instead of making this Jesus vs. Santa Claus, Mrs. Amos weaves a tale of Santa as a servant of Christ who wants to share His love rather than be the symbol of consumerism or the 'reason for the season' himself."

Gift of a Servant is a fictional tale told in verse of a father who blames Santa Claus for the commercialization and secularization of Christmas and waits up on Christmas Eve to demand his resignation. When Santa comes, however, he brings an unexpected gift: He takes Dad on a magical journey where he shares the reason for his visit through a symbolic vision, illustrating that Christmas is about sharing the love of Christ.

"Gift of a Servant links Santa Claus with his original identity as St. Nicholas and helps Christians to separate him from the materialism that has pervaded our culture, to use him to restore the focus of Christmas on Christ, and to explain how we participate in the miracle of Christmas," explains Tamara who uses Santa Claus as a model to teach her four children about generosity and Christmas spirit.

Gift of a Servant is an illustrated gift book written by Tamara Amos, illustrated by David W. Luebbert, and published October 1, 2013 by Mystical Rose Inspirations. It has won 13 book awards and has been featured on numerous media outlets including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and The CW.
