Irish poet and playwright W.B. Yeats once said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, it is the lighting of a fire." Indeed, education lays down the foundation for children to grow up and become citizens of good moral character. Author Joseph L. Borowitz stresses the importance of fourth-grade Sunday school and the lessons he learned as he spent Twenty-five Years in the Fourth Grade.

For the author, it was a challenge to make ten and eleven-year-old children aware of the rich traditions of two thousand years of Christianity and of the powerful, life-giving message of Jesus Christ. Many had come into the fourth grade with only a superficial awareness of the whole concept and with many doubts and frustrations. Like adults, some kids don't fully believe in God. Some believe in Him but think He really doesn't know what's going on, and even if He did, He couldn't do anything about it anyway. Thus, Borowitz believes that what the world needs in this twenty-first century are effective Sunday schoolteachers-people who can make God alive to young children and make His goodness evident in their surroundings.

In Twenty-five Years in the Fourth Grade, the author shares his reflections as a Sunday schoolteacher and insights including how Sunday school enhances family spirituality and relationships. He gives readers an inside look on what a Sunday class is like, how it should be conducted, the prerequisites of its teachers, the benefits of teaching this class, the many different personalities and more. As readers learn more of Borowitz's experiences, they will witness how God works in peoples' lives and how fulfilling it is to be a Sunday schoolteacher.
