Author Don Miles Releases 'Cinco de Mayo, the Novel'

In his new historical fiction novel "Cinco de Mayo, the Novel: A Saga of Courage and Defiance" (published by Trafford Publishing), Don Miles gives readers an inside look at family life in Mexico while taking them through the little known story behind the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

As French forces invade Mexico in 1862, Paloma Vargas discovers that her family's stagecoach business is the cover for a Mexican spy network. She teams up with Alonso Torres from Texas, who has come to avenge his father's cruel death in a hospital atrocity several years earlier. French contre-guérilla leaders, learning that a woman is causing disruption and death within their ranks, want to find out who she is and capture her at any cost.

Paloma ducked and dove behind Tomás, wrapping her arms around his lower legs and dumping him forward as Alonso whirled and planted a hard boot kick in his right ear. The gun slid across the deck as Paloma and Alonso sprawled Tomás on his belly and tied his hands behind his back. Berto and Esteban disarmed the stunned companion and held him at gunpoint, seated against the cabin wall.

"Who in the hell told you to follow us?" Berto yelled at Paloma. "We could all have been killed!"

Miles hopes women find "Cinco de Mayo, the Novel" particularly empowering. "The role of women in society plays an important part in the book," he says. "Paloma, especially, is symbolic of the strong women who are more likely to be found among us in the 21st century than were acknowledged in the 1800s."

Don Miles has visited Mexico at least once every year since 1962, traveling to many of the cities and small towns mentioned in his book "Cinco de Mayo, the Novel." Miles has published a history text and is retired from careers in teaching and in broadcasting. He lives in Austin, Texas.
