97-Year-Old 'Survivor' Shares Story in 'Survivor: USS Russell, A World War II Destroyer'

By: Oct. 10, 2013

Barry Friedman, M.D. (http://www.rogerfriedman.com/barry-friedman) will turn 97 in October and he is still one of the few left that is able to tell his incredible story of survival on a naval destroyer in World War II. He has written about his experiences in his book: Survivor: USS Russell, A World War II Destroyer (http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/148137).

Dr. Friedman's book is a gripping recollection of his service as Medical Officer aboard the Russell. The ship battled through 16 major engagements during World War II and brought home more than 1,200 survivors of bombed or torpedoed ships or crashed planes. Despite all of the carnage of World War II, the Russell brought its men back alive.

Dr. Friedman resides in San Diego and is a celebrity to the crew of the new USS Russell, currently stationed in his hometown. He has been a guest on the ship on several occasions, including the recent change of command ceremony.

Dr. Friedman is available for interviews regarding his book and his experiences. Here is a previous video interview he has done about "Survivor": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiYFWq9tTXo&feature=youtu.be.
